塩釉とは高温焼成中（1250℃～1300℃）に火口から塩（ナトリウム）を投入し、粘土に含まれるケイ酸と反応させる技法です。ケイ酸と反応した塩の成分であるナトリウムは、ケイ酸ナトリウム（ガラス）へと変化して作品の表面を覆います。この技法はドイツが起源として知られ、ヨーロッパ各地で産出される岩塩を原料としています。丸田正美は、丸田宗彦氏の父君になります。
